NO NAIS
UDSA's National Animal Identification System

If you value your rights to own, ride, transport your horse, then you must read all you can about the USDA's ill-conceived plan to regulate the livestock industry - including HORSES!

I've included web site links that are both in favor and opposed to NAIS. My opinion (and many others as well) is that it is a costly, unenforceable, unconstitutional governmental scheme and would result, if enacted (and it looks possible) in just one more law that is guaranteed to be broken by the small farmer and horse owner. It also will not solve the problem it is allegedly designed to solve, making our meat safe (read this as meat produced by large corporate meat producers). You can gain a clear understanding by reading the information provided by the web sites listed below and following links that are provided by these various sites.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
NAIS impacts your right to own horses, your right to farm and own personal property and your right to privacy from governmental surveillance

Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance FARFA is organized and operated exclusively for non-profit purposes as authorized under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code, and specifically in the public interest for the social welfare of independent farmers, ranchers, livestock owners, and homesteaders. The continued incursion of non-essential and burdensome restraints and demands compels a unified voice. FARFA shall serve as an advocate in the legislatures and the courts for the many thousands of independent farmers, ranchers, livestock owners, and homesteaders in this country. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THIS SITE.

No NAIS is a well-written, up-to-date BLOG (authored by a Vermont farmer) that is worth bookmarking for keeping current.

Dr. Mary Zanoni, Ph.D. (Cornell), J.D. (Yale) evaluates the system pointing out constitutional infirmities, economic costs, weakness for the programs rational, and other issues surrounding the proposed program.

The USDA site for reading about the program and its evolution.

Totalitarianism Through the Back Door an editorial about NAIS in The Partial Observer, a forum for observations on our world.

American Horse Council. A lobby group for horse owners who is in favor of NAIS for horses. Good idea to contact them and tell them what you think.

USDA Poised to push us off our farms with the National Animal Identification System. Editorial originally published in the Winter 2006 issue of The Small Farmers Journal.

Stop Animal ID One of the more alarmist sites but a good contrast to USDA information and worth pondering.

The National Animal Identification System: A New Threat to Rural Freedom Two excellent articles describing the program, its potential effects, and a call to action.

What you can do

  • Do not participate or enter into a voluntary state or federal program to register farms or animals.
  • Contact breed associations, organic and sustainable farming organizations or general farming interest groups and ask them to oppose the NAIS. Ask these organizations to start letter writing campaigns to state and federal officials within their organizations.
  • Write your federal and state legislator and tell them you oppose NAIS and want them to do something to stop it (go to www.congress.org for addresses).
  • Keep aware of press coverage or action alerts on NAIS, especially prior to July 2006 when public comment will be open. Links above can help with this.
  • If NAIS (or a state equivalent - already happening in Texas and other states) gets ready to go into effect, contact groups that may provide legal representation without cost (Farmers' Legal Action Group www.flaginc.org; the American Civil Liberties Union www.aclu.org; the American Bar Associations guide to legal services: www.abanet.org/legalservices/findlegalhelp/home.cfm.
